So What Is Therapy, Anyway?
Therapy is focused primarily on your past. In therapeutic work we seek explanations of present thoughts, feelings, and behaviors by looking to one's past to identify and heal wounds that have a negative impact on your life today. Generally speaking (and always when using medical insurance), therapy is focused on alleviating symptoms of a mental health diagnosis such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, various phobias, etc. This is often, but not always, long term work (1 year or more).
Okay, So How Is Coaching Different?
Coaching is focused more on helping you move from your present in which something isn't working right for you, to helping you attain the future you desire. In coaching work, there is often a clear goal (or, if not, we work together to come up with one or several goals to work towards). Coaching is much more action-oriented than therapy. It is not related to a mental health diagnosis. As a result, it is not covered by medical insurance. Coaching also tends to be short-term work (2-9months).
